'Commercial Kings,' Noah Wylie, 'Beginners,' Lady Gaga and more crack our Pop Ten

1. 'HI-HO TRASHICORN!'
From hometown hero Biagio Messina and wife Joke Fincioen, the team that brought you Cleveland International Film Festival favorite "Dying to Do Letterman," comes "Commercial Kings," a docu-comedy chronicling the exploits of pals Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal as they crisscross the country "making epic local commercials for some of the nation's most deserving local businesses." One of those businesses is Heavy Hill the Garbage Man and his trusty steed, Trashicorn, a donkey with a faux horn. With a cry of "Hi-Ho Trashicorn!" he flies through the air, plunger in hand, making trash disappear. Get a taste of the divine madness at ifc.com/rhett-link, then watch the series premiere 10 p.m. Friday, June 24, on IFC.

2. WHEN E.T.s ATTACK
In "Falling Skies," Noah "ER" Wyle stars as a history professor who lives through a devastating alien attack, then bands with other survivors to fight the extraterrestrial invaders. The series is a dramatic departure for executive producer Steven Spielberg, who has long been an advocate of positive alien programming with his portrayals of space creatures as benign and adorable. "I'm done with all that," Spielberg said following a prolonged disappearance during a family vacation in Wyoming. "I say, 'Blow 'em out of the sky.' " Premieres at 9 Sunday, June 19, on TNT.

3. HOT 'ER' ALUM ALERT
This emotionally charged indie features Oliver (Ewan McGregor) discovering that his widowed dad Hal (Christopher Plummer) has terminal cancer and a smokin' hot young boyfriend named Andy ("ER's" Goran Visnjic). Then Oliver meets free-spirited Anna ("Inglourious Basterds' " Melanie Laurent) and -- oh, who cares? You had me at Goran Visnjic. "Beginners" premieres in area theaters Friday, June 24.

4. GAGA GAG
"Apocalypse," the 13th studio album from musical satirist Weird Al Yankovic, hits stores Tuesday, June 21, with the single "Perform This Way," a parody of Lady Gaga's hit "Born This Way." Sample lyrics: "I'm so completely original. My new look is all the rage. I'll wrap my small intestines 'round my neck. And set fire to myself on stage." Wait, hasn't she already done that?

5. EXIT STRATEGIES
From the makers of "Wipeout" comes "101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow," in which competitors answer multiple-choice questions in pursuit of a $50,000 prize. Losers are shed in a variety of ways, including "being flown away strapped to the wing of a biplane, pushed off the top of a moving semi, dragged underwater by a one-ton anchor or yanked off a dock by a speed boat." Why can't contestants on "Celebrity Apprentice" be eliminated these ways? Premieres at 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, ABC.

6. DEJA VU TV
From the makers of "Survivor" comes "Expedition Impossible," a game show in which 13 teams of three "race across vast deserts, over snow capped mountains and through raging rivers in the beautifully exotic, fabled Kingdom of Morocco." Not to be confused with "The Amazing Race," an Emmy-winning game show in which 11 teams of two race around the world. "Expedition" has the audacity to premiere at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 23, on ABC.

7. CALL THE ASPCA
Elijah Wood stars in "Wilfred," the American remake of the Aussie series about a guy who thinks his neighbor's dog is a tubby bloke in a fur suit. Promos feature said bloke licking Elijah's tiny elfin face as if it were a sirloin steak and pouncing on hot women. Nothing a little neutering won't fix. Premieres 10 p.m. Thursday, June 23, on FX.

8. PAGING MAURY POVICH
In the thriller "Unknown," Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) awakens after a car accident in Berlin to find that his wife (January "Mad Men" Jones) doesn't know him, and another man (Aidan Quinn) has assumed his identity. Which reminds us of another unknown: the name of January's baby daddy. DVD drops Tuesday, June 21.

9. THE OTHER DENEUVE
Francois Truffaut's "The Soft Skin," a rare flop for the director when it was released in 1964, features Francoise Dorleac, Catherine Deneuve's sister, well on her way to stardom when she died in a car crash at age 25. Modern-day reviews have been kinder. The New Yorker calls the flick "one of Truffaut's best . . . a masterwork of erotic frenzy." Maybe in 47 years, critics will say the same about "Gigli." Screens 7:20 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday (June 24-25) at Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque.

10. SHEEN FATIGUE
What more debauchery and pain are left to uncover following the live interviews, incessant tweets and the Torpedo of Truth tour? Nada. But filmmakers behind the documentary "Charlie Sheen: Born to Be Wild" hope you'll shell out $14.95 anyway. DVD drops Tuesday, June 21.

Cash Cash Sexin' on the Dance Floor With Jeffree Star and ADG

(Submitted) Cash Cash have released their remix of "Sexin' on the Dance Floor," featuring a cameo from Jeffree Star. The track, which also features guest vocalist ADG, is available on iTunes.

"We've been friends with Jeffree Star for years and always wanted to do something together," tells vocalist Jean Paul Makhlouf. "When we were mixing our record we thought he would be perfect to sing a part on 'Sexin' on the Dance Floor!' The vibe just felt really right."

Jeffree's tongue-in-cheek (and probably elsewhere) vignette mocks online fame. The self-proclaimed "Queen of the Internet" pokes fun at the Internet's ironic princess, Rebecca Black, before launching into his trademark raunchy sing-rap.

The track embodies the more lascivious half of the running theme of the band's new alum, LOVE OR LUST, on which the original version of "Sexin' on the Dancefloor" appears.
Makhlouf and his bandmates (Alex Makhlouf – keyboards, Sam Frisch – bass/guitar, and Anthony Villacari – drums) loved the end result of their collaboration with Star so much that the band plan to continue. "We're working on producing a song for Jeffree," reveals Jean Paul. "We're really excited to finish that and possibly shoot a video for 'Sexin' On the Dance Floor' with Jeffree in it!"

Amy Winehouse "TOO DRUNK TO PERFORM"

Amy Winehouse has been booed by fans in Belgrade after a comeback concert ended in disaster.
An always unpredictable live act, concerts by Amy Winehouse are thin on the ground these days. Taking time off after a disastrous performance in St Luca, the singer returned to the stage in Belgrade over the weekend.
Part of her new 12 day European tour, Amy Winehouse gathered over 20,000 fans in the Serbian capital. However according to reports the singer gave a shocking performance, in which she appeared to be too drunk to sing.
The BBC reports that despite lasting 90 minutes onstage, Amy Winehouse struggled to complete a single song. Mumbling her way through a number of tracks, the singer at one point tossed her microphone to the ground.
Eventually leaving the stage altogether, her band attempted to fill in before Amy Winehouse returned to complete the set.
The concert cost some fans up to €45 to attend, with many left extremely angry by the singer's performance.
Recently attending rehab in London, Amy Winehouse has been under strict orders not to drink. Struggling with alcohol dependency for some time, the singer appears to have slipped back into old habits.
Set to play 12 dates on the new European tour, Amy Winehouse has responded to the Serbian show by cancelling two upcoming concerts. A spokesperson confirmed that the singer is pulling out of shows in Istanbul, Turkey, tonight (June 20th), and Athens, Greece, on Wednesday (June 22nd).
Apologising to fans, the spokesperson insisted that Amy Winehouse "feels that this is the right thing to do".

I’d honestly do anything but wear white after Labor Day cause baby, I perform this way!”  All proceeds from the song and music video will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign.
The video was shot prior to the pop star’s latest shocking appearance at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday night. Gaga stepped out of a cocoon at the Toronto, Canada event with blue arm pit and pubic hair! Check out the performance pics below!

Lady Gaga's 'Edge Of Glory' Video Details Possibly Revealed

New casting notice sheds some light on Gaga's latest clip, which she's scheduled to shoot this weekend.

Lady Gaga

In recent videos, she's messed around with a zombie ("Born This Way") and Jesus and Judas ("Judas"), and now it seems that Lady Gaga is looking to get with Enrique Iglesias — or someone that looks like him — in the upcoming clip for her new single, "The Edge of Glory."
According to a casting notice that E! News got their paws on, Gaga is looking for a hot dude to make out with in the video. Specifically, the notice asks for a "Puerto Rican or Dominican type badass" who "must be willing to kiss Lady Gaga ... Think Enrique Iglesias."
In addition to the hot guy, the casting call also is seeking "Couture Doctors" who will wear smocks and black gloves, adding "think 'Dr. 90210'." Other roles include a "male or female on-air reporter" and a group of military men to hold M16 rifles.
The video is set to shoot this weekend, and Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti mentioned the clip on Twitter earlier this week, writing, "so excited of 'edge of glory' shoot this week!! OMG..."
Gaga's creative director and music video co-director, Laurieann Gibson, recently spoke to Rap-Up.com and teased fans a bit about what they can expect from the clip. "We're actually getting ready to shoot 'Edge of Glory' and I just directed her Google commercial, so it's very fantastic," she shared, adding about the video, "I just know that we'll be feeling very fishy."
Gaga also gave a dramatic live performance of "The Edge of Glory" during the "American Idol" finale on Wednesday night. Dressed as some kind of warrior princess, Mother Monster sang the song from a fake rocky mountaintop while amorously embracing a male dancer. As the tune came to an end, the two leaped from the peak and out of sight behind the rocky set.
Don't miss "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside" to hear Mother Monster herself open up about the creative forces behind her generation-defining career. Our exclusive documentary airs Thursday, May 26, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, followed by a live stream on MTV.com hosted by MTV News' James Montgomery and featuring special guests Lady Starlight, Justin Tranter from Semi Precious Weapons, documentary director Davi Russo, producer Fernando Garibay and Gaga's biggest Little Monsters.

Katy Perry Performs at the 2011 Grammy Awards

Katy Perry at the 2011 Grammy Awards

Katy Perry went from angel to sparkly swing girl when she performed at the 2011 Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
The stunning pop star – who walked the red carpet with a huge pair of white angel wings – sat on a swing in a bejeweled leotard and tutu while footage from her wedding to Russell Brand played in the background.
After she was done singing her ballad, Katy got down from her swing and kicked things up a notch for a powerful performance of her hit, “Teenage Dream.” At one point, Katy told the audience to sing the words with her and Nicole Kidman began to sing along in the audience. We didn’t know Nicole was a Katy fan!
What did you think of Katy’s performance? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Jared Leto BIOGRAPHY ( and the curiosity)

Jared Leto

Date of Birth
26 December 1971, Bossier City, Louisiana, USA

Birth Name
Jared Joseph Leto

Nickname
J

Height
5' 10" (1.78 m)

Mini Biography
In the vein of musicians-turned-actors, Jared Leto is a very familiar face in recent film history. Although he has always been the lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and songwriter for American band 30 Seconds to Mars, Leto will always be remembered as an accomplished actor for the numerous, challenging projects he has taken in his life.

Born in Bossier City, Louisiana, Leto and his family travelled across the United States throughout Leto's childhood, living in such states as Wyoming, Virginia, and Colorado. Leto would continue this trend when he initially dropped a study of painting at Philadelphia's University of the Arts in favour of a focus on acting at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

In 1992, Leto moved to Los Angeles to pursue a musical career, intending to take acting roles on the side. Leto's first appearances on screen were as guest appearances on the short-lived television shows "Camp Wilder", "Almost Home", and "Rebel Highway". However, his next role would change everything for Leto. While searching for film roles, he was cast in the show _My So-Called Life (TV Series 1994-1995)_. Leto's character was Jordan Catalano, the handsome, dyslexic slacker, but also the main love interest of Angela (played by Claire Danes). Leto contributed to the soundtrack of the film, and so impressed the producers initially that he was soon a regular on the show until it's end.

Elsewhere, Leto began taking film roles. His first theatrically released film was the ensemble piece Gli anni dei ricordi (1995), based on a novel of the same name and starring renowned actresses Winona Ryder, Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Jean Simmons, and Alfre Woodard. The film was a modest success, and while Leto's next film, L'ultimo dei grandi re (1996), was a failure, Leto secured his first leading role in Prefontaine (1997), based on long-distance runner Steven Prefontaine. The film was a financial flop, but was praised by critics, notably Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. He also took a supporting role in the action thriller Linea di sangue (1997) which starred Dennis Quaid, but the film was another failure.

Leto's work was slowly becoming recognized in Hollywood, and he continued to find work in film. In 1998, everything turned for the better on all fronts. This was the year that Leto founded the band 30 Seconds to Mars with his brother, 'Shannon Leto', as well as Matt Wachter (who later left the group), and after two guitarists joined and quit, Tomo Milicevic was brought in as lead guitarist and keyboardist. As well as the formation of his now-famous band, Leto's luck in film was suddenly shooting for the better. He was cast as the lead in the horror film Urban Legend (1998), which told a grisly tale of a murderer who kills his victims in the style of urban legends. The film was a massive success commercially, though critics mostly disliked the film. That same year, Leto also landed a supporting role in the film La sottile linea rossa (1998). Renowned director Terrence Malick's first film in nearly twenty years, the film had dozens of famous actors in the cast, including Sean Penn, Woody Harrelson, John Travolta, Nick Nolte, and Elias Koteas to name a few. The film went through much editing, leaving several actors out of the final version, but Leto luckily remained in the film. La sottile linea rossa (1998) was nominated for seven Oscars and was a moderate success at the box office. Leto's fame had just begun.

He gave supporting roles in both James Mangold's Ragazze interrotte (1999), and in David Fincher's cult classic Fight Club (1999), dealing with masculinity, commercialism, fascism, and insomnia. While Edward Norton and Brad Pitt were the lead roles, Leto took a supporting role and dyed his hair blond. The film remains hailed by many, but at the time, Leto was already pushing himself further into controversial films. He played a supporting role of Paul Allen in the infamous American Psycho (2000), starring Christian Bale, and he played the lead role in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000), which had Leto take gruelling measures to prepare for his role as a heroin addict trying to put his plans to reality and escape the hell he is in. Both films were massive successes, if controversially received.

The 2000's brought up new film opportunities for Leto. He reunited with David Fincher in Panic Room (2002), which was another success for Leto, as well as Oliver Stone's epic passion project Alexander (2004). The theatrical cut was poorly received domestically (although it recouped its budget through DVD sales and international profit), and though a Final Cut was released that much improved the film in all aspects, it continues to be frowned upon by the majority of film goers. Leto rebounded with Lord of War (2005), which starred Nicolas Cage as an arms dealer who ships weapons to war zones, with Leto playing his hapless but more moral-minded brother. The film was an astounding look at the arms industry, but was not a big financial success.

Leto's flush of successes suddenly ran dry when he acted in the period piece Lonely Hearts (2006), which had Leto playing Ray Fernandez, one of the two infamous Lonely Hearts Killers in the 1940's. The film was a financial failure and only received mixed responses. Leto then underwent a massive weight gain to play Mark David Chapman, infamous murderer of John Lennon, in the movie Chapter 27 (2007). While Leto did a fantastic job embodying the behaviour and speech patterns of Chapman, the film was a complete flop, and was a critical bomb to boot. It was during this period that Leto focused increasingly on his band, turning down such films as Clint Eastwood's World War 2 film Flags of Our Fathers (2006).

In 2009, however, Leto returned to acting with his most ambitious film yet; Mr. Nobody (2009/I). Leto's role as Nemo Nobody required him to play the character as far aged as 118, even as he undergoes a soul searching as to whether his life turned out the way he wanted it to. The film was mostly funded through Belgian and French financiers, and was given limited release in only certain countries. Critical response, however, has praised the film's artistry and Leto's acting.

Jared Leto's story is a very charmed one, as he rose from television roles to film roles, to giving head-turning performances in famous projects alongside A-list casts. And all this on the side of his band 30 Seconds to Mars. Certainly it's not been easy for Leto, but he has earned his success and it will only fascinate to see what he does next.

I was never interested in 'Teen Beat' like roles. I just wanted to work.
I was raised around a lot of artists, musicians, photographers, painters and people that were in theater. Just having the art-communal hippie experience as a child, there wasn't a clear line that was drawn. We celebrated creative experience and creative expression. We didn't try and curtail it and stunt any of that kind of growth.
Teens are always shown as one dimensional. They're stereotyped. When I was in high school, I cared about more than getting a date or making the team.
I never look at myself as a closet actor wanting to make music or a closet musician wanting to act -- I'm very proud to do both and I don't put one above the other, I'm very grateful and excited by both opportunities -- it's really a unique opportunity to do both.
(On living in Haiti) I was 12. It's the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It was horrible to see people living in the street, in shacks, and bathing in sewer water and drinking bad water and begging and starving. It was unforgettable.
(2002, on his wild youth) I stole a lot when I was a kid, but I wouldn't steal one candy; I'd take the whole carton. I also used to like to break into other people's houses and sit in their rooms. I found it very comforting to be in someone's empty house.
(2002, on making Prefontaine) Pre was my first major part and I was pretty much operating under the assumption that I was going after the Olympics. [Laughs] I was so gung-ho and trying to do everything I could to be this guy. Plus, Prefontaine's family was around often, so it was a moving experience.
(2002, on what would surprise people the most about himself) Messing with computer hardware. I take computers practically apart and put them back together. I have a supercomputer I built over the years out of different computers.
(2002, on auditioning as a newbie actor in Hollywood) It was challenging and nerve-racking. I remember hiding behind an overturned desk, shooting imaginary guns at people. One time, I stopped and said, "I can't do this. I feel like I'm in a bad high school play. I'm sorry I'm wasting your time, but I've got to go."
(On getting back to normal after the weight loss needed for Requiem for a Dream) It was difficult. I walked around New York City for a while. Ultimately, I went to Portugal and stayed in this old monastery for weeks and ate fish and potatoes.
(On losing the weight for Requiem for a Dream) I didn't eat. I'd have broccoli, cucumber, but just a few bites of little things, never more. It was the hardest thing I've ever done to myself, willingly. It was really painful starting to eat again after that. I was filled with a lot of guilt. It can be an addiction to not eat when you make such a strong commitment to that. I heard this story about an English woman who was in a sailboat race for months around the world. At the end of the trip, she said it was so hard to step off the boat. She wanted to go back and do it again, and that's how I felt with Requiem. I was just bawling uncontrollably the last few days of shooting. I'd look at Darren (Aronofsky) and start crying. But there were moments of such reward.

Chris Crocker BIOGRAPHY (and the curiosity)

Chris Crocker (born Christopher Darren Cunningham; December 7, 1987)[4] is an American Internet celebrity, blogger, and recording artist. Crocker gained international fame in September 2007 from his viral video "Leave Britney Alone", in which he tearfully defended pop singer Britney Spears's comeback performance at the MTV Video Music Awards; his video had over four million views in two days.[5] The video received international media attention, hundreds of parodies and criticism for Crocker.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
He is a self-described "edutainer" who produces and acts in multiple videos.[1][2][12][13] In almost all of Crocker's work he presents himself as an openly gay and effeminate Southern adolescent in a "small-minded town" in the Bible Belt where his sexual orientation and outspokenness are a "subtext... rarely addressed directly and never completely accepted."[1][12] The Tennessee-based Crocker, a stage name, keeps his identity and exact location private because according to him, and as seen in the public comments to his work, therem, are safety concerns and death threats in response to his YouTube and MySpace video blogs and profile.[1][14][15][16][17] According to his MySpace profile, Crocker lived in Los Angeles as of January 2008.[18] As of May 2010, Crocker has returned home to Tennessee and solely travels to Los Angeles for business ventures.[19]
His work consists mainly of short-form self-directed monologues shot in his grandparents' home.[20] As of October 2010, Crocker's videos have received a combined 50 million plays on MySpace, and his vlog channel on YouTube is the 100th most viewed of all time in all categories, with over 205 million video views.[21][22] Crocker's detractors and critics have accused him of narcissism, melodramatics, histrionics, and using Spears' personal shortcomings to bolster his own fame.[10][23][24][25][26] Others have accused Crocker of acting in the "Leave Britney Alone" video, although he insisted it was genuine on a September 2007 appearance on Maury Povich's Maury show.[17][27][28]

Early life

Crocker was born in Eastern Tennessee to a teenage couple and was raised by his grandparents.[20] Crocker said he "raised eyebrows" by bringing Barbie dolls to kindergarten for show and tell rather than the toys or action figures usually associated with boys.[20] He lived in Eastern Tennessee and was homeschooled in response to constant "death threats, bullying and glares at his clothes and makeup"[1][18][20] specifically after allegedly being "harassed by a homophobic high school gym coach".[14][29] Crocker lived with his fundamentalist[30] Pentecostal grandparents who continued raising him when his teenage parents were not able; while his grandfather reportedly knows little about his Internet fame, his grandmother has reluctantly appeared in some of his videos.[1][20][31]

Career

Crocker's uncensored and "unfiltered" work has been attributed to his isolation as an "effeminate, Southern, flamboyantly gay" adolescent in a "small-minded town" in the Bible Belt.[1] His sexual orientation and outspokenness have been described as a "subtext... rarely addressed directly and never completely accepted" in his hometown.[1] According to Crocker, when his grandmother found out that he was gay, she initially "said that [he] needed an exorcism".[1] Crocker, who laments his town's lack of gay culture, said, "The only gay pride parade where I live is in my bedroom" as he held up a rainbow frosted cupcake.[32] He added, "We don't have pride and rainbows here. We have MySpace. We don't have bathhouses, we have outhouses."[33]
Crocker's earliest experience with online networking was as an editor of an e-zine, where he met his first boyfriend, with whom he was only able to interact online and by phone. Crocker later found another online forum, where his acting skills helped him blend in on a free phone party line run out of Los Angeles "filled with flaming black men, black drag queens, and trannies from Compton", where he was outed as white and dubbed "Cracker".[1] In June 2006, after years of experience on the Internet, Crocker started uploading self-produced videos, characterized as his "singularly bizarre and angry take on gay life and his intolerant town".[1]

Building a following

Although his chart-topping video defending Britney Spears drew the attention of the wider public, Crocker had already become one of the most-watched video producers on MySpace and YouTube, having gathered what MSNBC described as a "cult following".[11][17][34] Prior to Crocker's defense of Spears, some of the more than sixty videos he had posted to the two social networking websites had already been viewed more than a million times each, and his YouTube channel was in the top rankings.[17] In May 2007, Crocker was the subject of a lengthy profile in the Seattle alternative weekly The Stranger.[1]
In addition to the "Leave Britney Alone" videos Crocker has produced and posted dozens of others with over fifty posted on both MySpace and YouTube, although some are only posted on one site or the other, many becoming "viral video hits".[1] Some consider them to be bold and seething "flares sent up by a young gay man marooned in a sea of rednecks" who is stuck in a small town that "can't tolerate homosexuality and punishes flamboyance."[1] Crocker's videos include "sex-filled confessions" and "wild monologues" talking "about everything from AIDS to pubic hair."[1][17] In many of the videos he portrays characters, such as an older deeply religious woman in the "The Earl Annie Edna show" series and exaggerated comic characterizations of Southern stereotypes earning comparisons to Andy Kaufman and being called "an insidious satiric mastermind".[35][36]
In September 2007, "The Top (& Bottom) Gays of You Tube!", the first all-gay collaboration video by YouTube's most subscribed video bloggers, was posted by Michael Buckley ("What The Buck?!")[37] to create a "YouTube gay village."[38] Featuring Crocker in a heavily affected persona, William Sledd, and "Gay God" (Matthew Lush), the video consisted of each of the four bloggers commenting on the others' vlogging, with Buckley acting as host for the various outtakes.[38] Buckley remarked that Crocker is a unique talent and "one of the most creative video producers on YouTube."[38] Before the "Leave Britney Alone" video aired, Crocker's subscriber base had put him below the other collaborators' rankings in the 24th position in the all-time rankings for most channel subscribers (in all categories). As of May 2009, "What The Buck?!" is 8th, Crocker's channel, "It's Chris Crocker" is 27th, Sledd is 77th and "Gay God" is 100th.[39] These are all down from previously higher placements from February 2008 when "What The Buck?!" was 6th, Crocker's channel 8th, Sledd 13th and "Gay God" in 25th. As of October 2010, the video has been viewed over 1,170,000 times, with over 9,500 comments.[38]

"Leave Britney Alone!"

Crocker is best known for his Britney Spears videos, posted to YouTube in September 2007. The first part of the infamous work though was posted September 9, 2007 called "Leave Britney Alone pt.1" to his MySpace page, while the better-known "LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!" (part 2) was posted to both MySpace and YouTube. In "Leave Britney Alone pt.1", an emotional Crocker stated that he did not want fellow Southerner[20] and gay icon Britney Spears[40] to spiral out of control like Anna Nicole Smith, who had died in February 2007. As of November 2010, the video had been viewed over 35 million times and has accumulated a total of over 500,000 comments.[41] It is just a few seconds shorter than the second part, and Crocker, although emotional, remains relatively calm and composed, becoming teary only at the very end.
In the videos, Crocker lashes out at gossip columnists such as Perez Hilton, and at reality TV star Simon Cowell, who criticized Britney Spears' onstage music performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas.[42][43][44][45] Within the first 24 hours of its posting, the video had accumulated over 2 million views.[17] As of January 2009, it has accumulated a total of 24 million views and is the second most discussed video of all time on the site (in all categories), with over 350,000 comments.[42][46] "LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!" is one of YouTube's fastest "climbing" videos, reaching the minimum seven million views needed (as of September 2007) to be included in the "Top 100".[47] The video was nominated in the Commentary category in the 2007 YouTube Awards.[48] The video received worldwide attention and earned Crocker interviews on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The Today Show, Maury, The Howard Stern Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning show. Crocker and his video were also commented on in the mainstream media by shows like The View and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[17][49] YouTube said "the melodramatic two-minute clip made Crocker an instant YouTube star" and named it one of the top videos of 2007.[50] Wired magazine named it the top video of 2007.[51]
Although sometimes shown in conjunction with news footage of Spears' performance, the "pure performance art" video has become its own story, with the news media and gossip industry offering opinions on the phenomenon and even joking that Crocker could be "an insidious satiric mastermind" and compared him to Andy Kaufman.[10][35][52] In the video, Crocker proclaims, "All you people care about is readers and making money off of her. She's a human! Leave Britney alone!"[7][53][54] Crocker stated that although he is often acting in his videos, his emotions were genuine and "straight from the heart"; although he described the clip as a "second take" in one interview, he clarified on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he meant that it was the second part of a longer video, the first part being "Leave Britney Alone pt. 1".[15][17][31][55]
The "LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!" video became a satire target with parody videos as well as references in mainstream television spoofs, and films.[56] Actor Seth Green's parody, which included him applying eyeliner several times and promoting his show Robot Chicken, called for people to "leave Chris Crocker alone!"[3][57] Some video responses characterized Crocker as a drama queen and, Wired magazine noted, "sent world Schadenfreude levels zooming to heights unseen since the Fatty Arbuckle scandal."[51][58]
The January 2008 parody film Meet the Spartans used pop culture references and met with generally poor reviews; the Electronic Urban Report called Crocker's cameo the "film's funniest moment".[56][59] Both Crocker and the video were also parodied in the South Park episode "Canada on Strike" with a cartoon Crocker running around in a fight between various Internet memes, telling them to "leave the others alone".[60][61] In March 2008, a "trance remix" dance single "Leave Britney Alone" was released on iTunes and other sites by "Double J" featuring quotes from Crocker's video.[62] On the Hannah Montana episode, "Welcome to the Bungle", when Lilly phones the journalists to tell them to leave Hannah alone, she accidentally shouts "Leave Britney alone!". Miley questions "Britney?" and Lilly corrects herself by responding, "Oh, oh, sorry, my bad.. 'Leave Hannah alone!'".[63]
While numerous news and media outlets reported on the viral video, Fox News Channel's morning program Fox & Friends commentators questioned his gender and compared the fabric backdrop in his video to Osama Bin Laden's videos.[64][65][66] Crocker produced two response videos - Poor FOX "News".. and Rosie O'Donnell was right about FOX "News" (originally posted as "Dear Fox 'News'") - addressing what he characterized as biased treatment while he called Fox News the "Republican, conservative, homophobic channel".[67][68] Crocker's stated concerns were the commentators calling him a "she/he" and what he felt was their needless questioning of his gender instead of commenting on the content of his video.[67][68]
Crocker's video was referenced in an episode of American TV series Glee, "Britney/Brittany", in which Brittany Pierce tells the glee club she does not want to perform Britney Spears' music because she feels she has been overshadowed by her fame due to the similarity in their names. Kurt is angry at Brittany, but Santana replies, "Leave Brittany alone!"

Onch promotional deal and lawsuit

In October 2007 TMZ.com reported that Crocker was being sued by Onch Movement Jewelry for 1 million dollars, for fraud and breach of contract and provided a copy of the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles.[69] Jewelry designer Nelson Chung, professionally known as Onch and a fan of Crocker, hired him as a celebrity spokesmodel for more than two days' worth of publicity work as well as appearance at World of Wonder's Just Britney art show in exchange for airfare.[70] It was speculated by DMW Media that Crocker had no legal representative as the agreement seemed unbalanced.[71] Crocker did make appearances including at gay club Rage and the art show where he was interviewed by MTV showing artwork of him in homage to Spears.[72][73] Onch's YouTube channel also posted videos of appearances which were later removed.[74]

Mainstream media exposure

Prior to the attention from his September 2007 Leave Britney Alone video, Crocker was seen as viral and was asked by MTV pioneering vlogger and news staffer Matt Sunbulli to provide video for MTV's website which also broadcasts on MTV itself.[1][75][75] Crocker has indicated that he hopes to develop his acting career and has agreed to develop ideas for a TV show with Los Angeles producer Glenn Meehan and has met with representatives from MTV's gay-themed channel LOGO.[1][15] According to Variety, Crocker has signed a development deal with 44 Blue Productions to create a "docusoap" reality television show, which will be called Chris Crocker's 15 Minutes More.[76] Said Rasha Drachkovitch, the production company's co-founder: "It's going to pretty much be the Chris Crocker experience. We consider him a rebel character that people will find interesting. He's going to be a TV star."[34]

Post-meme career

After the widespread recognition of Leave Britney Alone, Crocker has been involved in several projects. In a June 2007 autobiographical comic strip, where Crocker discusses future plans, he states, "I'm going to make the leap from living with my Pentecostal grandparents to living with drag queen roommates. I'm going to star in my own TV show. I'm going to make the leap from outhouses to bathhouses...to my very own house."[33] In October 2007, Crocker opened Fox Reality channel's "Reality Remix Really Awards".[77]
Crocker was one of Lily Allen's Internet correspondents on the February 2008 premiere episode of BBC's Lily Allen and Friends where he posed questions for the guest celebrities, in this case David Mitchell and later, Cuba Gooding, Jr.[78][79][80]
In an April 9, 2008 video blog Crocker announced he refused the television network's offer to star in his own show on the grounds that it would be censored.[81] Crocker was outraged and refused the deal and claimed he would continue to post his videos on YouTube.com in an effort to draw in more viewers to the video hosting web site."[81]
On May 23, 2008 rock band Weezer released a viral music video for their song "Pork and Beans" - "a natural anthem for the self-expression that's been taking shape on YouTube" - which featured various mash-ups of viral videos and Youtube celebrities, including Crocker, all playing themselves.[82][83][84][85] On May 22, 2009 Crocker made a video showing a Grammy plaque that he received for his contribution to the band's video.
On July 25, 2008 Crocker posted a video, "www.MsChrisCrocker.Com", in which he states he is leaving YouTube citing issues of censorship from YouTube for removing him from the most viewed and talked about lists and excluding him from their events.[86] Despite this statement, he has since returned to using YouTube as a means for publishing videos. In August 2008, Crocker was featured in a Sierra Mist commercial.[87] On July 9, 2009 Crocker appeared on the Comedy Central show Tosh.0.[88]

Music

In September 2008, Crocker kicked off a music career when he released his debut single "Mind in the Gutter".[89] The song was initially meant to be the lead single from his unreleased debut album, Turned On. In March 2009, Crocker leaked an unreleased song entitled "Fell for the Enemy".[90] After the leaking of "Fell For the Enemy", Crocker did not return to the music business for awhile, stating he felt as though producers saw him as "just another paycheck." However, April 2010 saw the release of Crocker's second single, a ballad titled "Love You Better". The single came in two versions, the studio version as well as an acoustic version. Shortly afterwards, in July of the same year, Crocker's third single, "Best of Both Worlds" was released to generally negative reception.[citation needed] October 13 saw the official release of "Fell For the Enemy", the song Crocker had previously leaked online. The following month, Crocker released his fifth single, "Freak of Nature". In January 2011, Crocker released his first music video, for his latest song "Freak of Nature" and in February, Crocker released "I Want Your Bite", which peaked at #12 on the iTunes Dance Charts.[91][92] Crocker also confirmed a music video for "I Want Your Bite", which will be released in March 2011.[dated info]
On August 29, 2010, Crocker announced via a YouTube video, titled "Me 2 u. [A lil' update]" that he will be "self releasing" his own album in 2011. However, recording will take place in 2010.[93] The album later was pushed back and instead Crocker announced his first EP titled "The First Bite". The EP will include "Freak Of Nature", "I Want Your Bite" as well as three completely new songs. "The First Bite" was released digitally on iTunes on March 19, 2011. Crocker released a preview video for his EP on March 15, 2011 and a full song titled "One Day" on 17 March 2011 on YouTube.

Selected videography

Crocker has posted dozens of videos, often to both YouTube and Myspace and has sometimes also removed videos or renamed them. In 2008 he also launched his own website which also hosted his work. As of October 2010, he has 63 videos on his MySpace page and 246 on YouTube.[2][21]
  • "This & that." was posted December 28, 2006 to Myspace and February 25, 2007 to YouTube.[94][95] Crocker's first video, where he starts very serenely then quickly escalates yelling "You wanna fight me?" in a menacing manner while revealing his scrawny chest belying the absurdity "that anyone would see this waify kid as a threat worthy of violence."[1] This has been interpreted as a "brilliant way of mocking his virtual haters" but can also be seen as a fantasy fight that he could only win in a virtual world because of his obvious diminutive stature.[1] The video was hosted on Salon.com and remains one of his most popular with over 3.9 million views and over 30,000 comments as of May 2009.[17][94][95]
  • "Bitch, please!" was posted December 29, 2006 to MySpace and February 25, 2007 to YouTube.[96][97] One of Crocker's first videos to receive over a million viewers showed Crocker's self-assuredness as he offers increasingly angry versions of the phrase Bitch, please "complete with hair flips, bared teeth, and hand gestures."[1][17] The video has had over five million views and nearly 30,000 comments as of June 2008.[96][97]
  • "Watch it." was posted January 24, 2007 to Myspace.[98] One of Crocker's shortest videos at just 1:25 minutes features him dancing erotically and provocatively to Nivea's "Watch It". The video has over 1.4 million views and nearly 7,000 comments as of March 2008.[98] Likewise "Chris Crocker is Damaged!", posted March 4, 2008 to YouTube, shows him dancing to Danity Kane's "Damaged" and has nearly 2.8 million views and over 34,000 comments as of June 2008.[99][100]
  • "Why I'm Gay.." was posted August 10, 2007 to both YouTube and MySpace.[101][102] Crocker discusses why he has no need to "come out" of the closet as gay. The video was hosted on Salon.com and has had over 1.2 million views and nearly 12,000 comments as of September 2007.[17][101][102]
  • "Kids SHOULD Cuss" was posted August 23, 2007 to YouTube.[103] Crocker discusses language and the use of curse words like fuck asking "why is shit more profane than poop?" He ties the discussion to free speech and encourages everyone to use swear words and teach them to children to ensure freedom of speech is assured. The video was hosted on Salon.com and has had over 427,000 views as of September 2007, it was subsequently removed by Crocker.[17][103]
  • "Back up, Britney haters!" was posted September 1, 2007 to YouTube.[104] Crocker's first major departure from describing his gay life in a Bible Belt town and instead on Britney Spears which he thought would be poorly received by his fans.[17] From a floor covered in Spears-related magazines and memorabilia Crocker asserts he is "a real Britney fan".[17] The video has nearly 2.7 million views as of October 2010.[104]
  • "Britney, this is for you" was posted September 3, 2007 to YouTube.[105] Crocker pays homage to Spears' recently released single Gimme More. Just two days after his first video about Spears this precedes his most known video Leave Britney Alone by eight days. The video has been viewed over 4.1 million times and received over 55,000 comments as of January 2008.[105]
  • "Watch Chris Crocker blink." originally titled "Best video EVER!" was posted March 17, 2008 to YouTube.[100][106][107] One of the shortest viral videos - at less than five seconds long - and likely the shortest one Crocker has ever posted shows a close-up of just his face as he smiles into the camera and blinks twice.[106] The "unwitting Andy Warhol homage" (see 15 minutes of fame) was explained by Crocker that he need only "blink to get the video views I do."[106][107][108] The video was viewed over a million times in the first two days and nearly 6.8 million times and received over 70,000 comments as of November 2010.[106][107]
